Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Gujarati: મોહનદાસ કરમચંદ ગાંધી, pronounced [moːɦənˈdaːs kəɾəmˈtʂənd ˈɡaːndʱiː] ( listen); 2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was the pre-eminent political and spiritual leader of India during the Indian independence movement. He was the pioneer of satyagraha—resistance to tyranny through mass civil disobedience, firmly founded upon ahimsa or total nonviolence—which led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Gandhi is commonly known around the world as Mahatma Gandhi (Sanskrit: महात्मा mahātmā or "Great Soul", an honorific first applied to him by Rabindranath Tagore),[1] and in India also as Bapu (Gujarati: બાપુ, bāpu or "Father"). He is officially honoured in India as the Father of the Nation; his birthday, 2 October, is commemorated there as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and worldwide as the International Day of Non-Violence.
Gandhi first employed non-violent civil disobedience while an expatriate lawyer in South Africa, during the resident Indian community's struggle for civil rights. After his return to India in 1915, he organized protests by peasants, farmers, and urban labourers concerning excessive land-tax and discrimination. After assuming leadership of the Indian National Congress in 1921, Gandhi led nationwide campaigns to ease poverty, expand women's rights, build religious and ethnic amity, end untouchability, and increase economic self-reliance. Above all, he aimed to achieve Swaraj or the independence of India from foreign domination. Gandhi famously led his followers in the Non-cooperation movement that protested the British-imposed salt tax with the 400 km (240 mi) Dandi Salt March in 1930. Later he campaigned against the British to Quit India. Gandhi spent a number of years in jail in both South Africa and India.
As a practitioner of ahimsa, he swore to speak the truth and advocated that others do the same. Gandhi lived modestly in a self-sufficient residential community and wore the traditional Indian dhoti and shawl, woven with yarn he had hand spun on a charkha. He ate simple vegetarian food, and also undertook long fasts as a means of both self-purification and social protest.

Ripon Building is the seat of the Chennai Corporation in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This is a fine example of Indo-Saracenic style of architecture, a combination of three types of architectural styles - Gothic, Ionic and Corinthian.
The Ripon Building is white in colour and is located near the Central station in Chennai. Commissioned in 1913, it was built by a builder named Loganatha Mudaliar. the Building took four years to build at a cost of 750,000 Rupees. Ripon building was named after Lord Ripon, Governor-General of British India and the Father of local self-government. Earl of Minto, the then Viceroy and Governor General of India laid the foundation on December 12, 1909.
The Municipal Corporation of Madras, after functioning from several other places, settled at Ripon building in 1913, with P.L. Moore as the President of the Municipal Corporation at the time of the * The building is rectangular and is 85 meters long and 32 metres wide.
* The first of its three floors offers about 2,800 square metres of space.
* Its central tower is 43 metres tall and has a clock 2.5 metres in diameter.
* The walls were constructed with stock bricks, set and plastered with lime mortar.
* The roofs are supported with teak wood joists. The original flooring of the ground floor was Cuddapah Slate. This has now been replaced with marble.
* One of the main attractions of the building is the Westminster Quarter chiming clock. This was installed by Oakes and Co. in 1913. The clock has a mechanical key system, which is wound every day. There are a total of 4 bells, which were cast by Gillet and Johnston in 1913.

The building now housing the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu is the focus of Fort St. George and the Fort is the fulcrum around which the metropolitan city of Madras, now known as Chennai, grew in the past three and a half centuries. The foundation for this vibrant city was laid way back in July/August 1639, by Francis Day and Andrew Cogan, two traders of East India Company. A major portion of it was probably completed by the St. George's Day i.e., 23rd April, 1640, and hence named as Fort St. George. The other important construction in 1680 was the St. Mary's Church, the first Anglican Church in the country.
In the beginning the Fort had a simple plan. At the centre, was the Governor's house or the "Castle". There was an outer fortification. The English families settled in the space between the castle and the outer fortification. Soon a flourishing settlement of native weavers, painters and other workers of cloth grew up to the north of the outer fortification. This settlement possibly got the name "Chennapatnam" as per the wishes of the Nayaka who desired to name the settlement after his father Chennappa Nayaka.
A large grey structure with numerous block columns located in the centre of the enclosure towards the east, was in fact the first Fort House of the British. The Fort House began to function as a trading warehouse in the early part of the 17th century. Much against the wishes of the East India Company, Fort St. George grew as the trade grew. The Fort House was eventually pulled down in 1693 when it showed signs of collapse and rebuilt further east which took two years. Part of the structure still exists today as the core of the present Secretariat building. By this reconstruction St. Mary's Church acquired the title of the oldest building in Madras. The fort remained as a commercial outpost with a limited defense for over a century until it was attacked and captured by the French in 1746. By 1710, the Fort had filled up with proper houses, all of them organised in neat streets to the north and south of the main building.
In 1746, in a siege, the French destroyed a part of the Black Town. During the unsuccessful siege of the French, for the second time, in 1758, many buildings were considerably damaged and most of them lost their upper floors. The St. Mary's Church was the only one that survived.
Hectic reconstruction and new constructions followed for two decades. The King's Barracks was the biggest of them all spreading over 10,000 sq.meters. By 1783, the Fort was very much as it is today. The three-storied structure, housed the Governor's residence in the uppermost floor, with rooms for the Council in the lower ones. In 1714 a detached gallery of rooms was constructed, enclosing the central building into what was known as the Fort Square. In 1790 the Exchange building, now called the Fort Museum, was constructed. The Fort was now self-sufficient. During this phase, the walls too were strengthened. The western front was completely altered. To extend the western side, the course of the Elambore River was diverted by filling the riverbed and the fort turned from square into pentagon shape. A wet ditch or moat was then dug around the main curtain wall and around each of the ravelins and lunettes.
However no further additions were made until 1825, when wings appeared on either side of the western portion of the building overlooking the Parade Square behind. In 1910 a second floor over the wings and the magnificent Assembly Hall to the east with numerous black columns were added enhancing its facade. This ornately decorated Assembly Hall continues to function effectively to this day.
Until the late 19th century, the sea line was very close to the eastern wall. Goods were embarked on the short stretch of sand before the Sea Gate in the centre of the fortification on this side. When the sea began to recede with the building of the harbour in the late 19th century, a road was formed in front of the Fort. The old Sea Gate, whose iron-studded doors had remained closed for a long time, was considered too small and was substituted by two newer ones on either side called the North and South Sea Gates in 1930. The unused small centre gate was sealed with bricks in 1942, for fear of invasion by the Japanese.

Dusted off the museum dungeons and given a fresh coat of paint, Kannagi is back on her proud pedestal on the scenic Marina shores (of Chennai) striking her famous pose — right hand clenching the ruby-crusted anklet, pointing out imperiously. But even after her dramatic return to Chennai’s landscape, at a gala function by CM M Karunanidhi on his birthday on June 3, Kannagi is still in the news. Reacting to a muted warning by Karunanidhi against ‘critics’ of Tamil culture, DMK workers today set fire to copies of Ananda Vikatan, a Tamil weekly, for daring to criticise the new government’s move to get Kannagi back on her perch.
The first spark was lit by N Y Sankaran (who goes by the pseudonym, Gnani), who in his column in the Tamil weekly compared DMK’s ‘passion’ for Kannagi to ‘‘some children who never outgrew a teddy bear.’’
Kannagi is the legendary heroine of the ancient Tamil literary work ‘Silapathigaram’ written by Ilango Adigal. Seen as an enduring symbol of Tamil culture and chastity, her statue was installed in 1968 during the DMK regime under C N Annadurai. But the statue suddenly disappeared in December 2001 when the AIADMK was in power with rumours abounding that it had been removed after warnings of doom by astrologers and ‘vaastu’ experts close to Jayalalithaa.
According to Silapathigaram, Kannagi’s husband Kovalan was beheaded on the orders of the King of Madurai after being accused of stealing the queen’s anklet (with pearls inside) and selling it. Kannagi went to the King’s court to demand justice and proved to him that Kovalan was trying to sell her anklet, which had rubies and not pearls inside it. While the King and queens die of remorse, Kannagi burned down Madurai with a curse.
In his column, Gnani wondered how Kannagi accepting her husband Kovalan, who returned after deserting her for 10 years for a courtesan, Madhavi, was relevant to present day situation. Today, a marriage is termed dead if a husband deserts his wife for more than seven years. He also asked what the crime of the people of Madurai was that they had to die too. Gnani equated the ‘mystery’ of the statue’s disappearance during Jayalalithaa’s regime to the ‘yellow shawl’ always worn by Karunanidhi.
The columnist’s views evoked a sharp reaction from Karunanidhi, who warned against ‘‘playing with fire by provoking Tamil sentiments.’’ The statue, which had been installed taking into consideration its ‘‘hoary tradition’’ had been treated like ‘‘a beggar’’ by the previous government, he said. ‘‘Tamil had fallen into ruins (during the previous regime). Instead of giving a helping hand some people are hindering the process,’’ Karunanidhi said during the Saturday function when the Kannagi statue was reinstalled

Marina Beach is a beach in the city of Chennai, India, along the Bay of Bengal, part of the Indian Ocean. The beach runs from near Fort St. George in the north to Besant Nagar in the south, a distance of about 12 km.[1] The Marina is primarily sandy, unlike the short, rocky formations that make up the Juhu Beach in Mumbai on the west coast of India.
The beach washed up close to the present day road for a long time until the harbour was built in 1881. Mountstuart Elphinstone Grant-Duff, the governor of Madras from 1881 to 1886, conceived and built the promenade along the beach and christened it the Marina in 1884. Eventually, the north-drifting current widened the beach to its present extent.
The Marina used to be famed for its pristine beauty, jolly ambiance, and rich ecosystems. However, since the middle of the 20th century, the beach and water has become polluted. A proliferation of plastic bags, human waste and other pollutants have rendered many parts of the beach unusable. In recent years, many voluntary organizations have taken up the task of cleaning up the Marina and protecting the ecosystem. Particular efforts include protection of Olive Ridley turtle nests along the Neelangarai section of the beach. Despite these problems, a visit to the Marina is considered a must for any tourist coming to Chennai.
Marina beach is a major tourist attraction. People visiting Chennai make a point to visit the beach. The beach is popular for its shops and food stalls. The memorials and statues, morning walk, joggers' track, lovers' spot, aquarium, etc., make it a hangout for people of all ages. The sea is rough and waves are strong. There are fishermen colonies present at both ends of the beach.
Bathing/swimming is illegal at Marina beach and there are no lifeguards stationed here.
The Chennai Corporation took up the Marina Renovation Project in 2008 which aims at improving landscaping, seating arrangements, walkways and lighting along the promenade and is near completing the work of renovating the beach at a cost of 259.2 million Indian Rupees. There is a skating rink behind the Gandhi Statue which has been improved with hand rails and tiles on the periphery under the Marina Renovation Project. A total of 14 galleries with seating arrangements have been created on the 2.8-km stretch between Triumph of Labour Statue and the Light House. The 3-km stretch from the Anna Square to the Light House has uninterrupted pavement and a sub-road parallel to the main road.
As part of "Chennai Forever" initiative by Tamil Nadu government, a 34-feet tall, artificial Marina Waterfall was installed in September 2005 at a cost of 1.5 million Indian Rupees.
Facing the Marina Beach stands the Vivekananda House (formerly known as the Ice House) where the great monk Swami Vivekananda stayed for nine days in 1897. The Vivekananda House hosts art exhibits about the life and mission of Swami Vivekananda, the ideologies of the Hindu religion, etc. which form an attraction.
Being the city's primary area for recreation, the entire stretch features numerous statues and monuments that have come up over the years along the beach promenade, called Kamarajar Salai. The stretch is also home to various governmental institutions and historic buildings from the British rule.

The Cineplex has 2380[1] seat capacity and six cinema screens, the latest of which is Serene.
In May 2005, Sathyam theatre became the first and only cinema theatre in India to utilise Texas Instruments' Digital Light Processing(DLP) technology.[2] To inaugurate the introduction of the RDX(TM) technology at the Sathyam screen, a major city-wide campaign was launched, which coincided the worldwide release of Star Wars Episode III. This became the first movie to be projected using the Digital technology.
In January 2006, Kiran Reddy , the Managing Director of Sathyam Cinemas told The Hindu that major expansion plans are in the offing.[3] The existing 6 screen complex would be expanded to accommodate 2 more screens while two new complexes - one in Kilpauk, on Poonamalee High Road and the other in Vadapalani. The Kilpauk multiplex will have 10 screens while the Vadapalani one will have 8. As for plans to build iMAX theaters, Reddy stated that their project is waiting approval.
Further, in an interview with The Hindu in September 2006, Sathyam Cinemas' Chief Operating Officer Tan Ngaronga has stated that the planned flagship multiplex will be located within the premises of the upcoming Express Estates mall on Club House Road.[4] It will have 9-10 screens. The other multiplex will be located at Poonamallee High Road. He also stated that the company has expansion plans in South India, however it will retain its Chennai base.[4]
Recently, the entire cineplex witnessed a major over-haul, which coincided with the nation-wide premiere of Spider-Man 3.[5]

The Parthasarathy temple in Chennai has its origin back in 8th century. It was generally built by the Pallavas and later reformed by the Vijayanagar Kings during 11th century. The literal meaning of 'Parthasarathy' is the charioteer. According to the great Indian epic 'Mahabharata' 'Partha' meant Arjuna while sarathy is meant as charioteer. In the epic it is said during the great battle of Mahabharata Lord Krishna was the charioteer of Arjuna. In the epic Arjuna or partha was a brave warrior and Lord Krishna was a good friend, philosopher and guide to the Partha or Arjuna.
Though the Parthasarathy temple is devoted to the various incarnations of Lord Vishnu the main deity is 'Lord Krishna' one of the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Also the other exquisite feature of this Parthasarathy temple is the colored gopuram. 'Gopuram' is said to the pyramidical shaped temple top which is a stereotyped feature of the South Indian temples.

The goddess Parvati is believed to be the wife of Shiva according to the Hindu religious belief. Here in this Kapaleeshwarar temple you can view goddess Parvati been depicted as peacock and she is worshipping the lingam or the idol of Lord Shiva. You can also see the bronze carvings of the 63-Shaivate saints, which are carried in procession during the Aruvathumoovar festival, which is held in March-April. In the courtyard of the temple there is a holy Punnai tree, which is one of the oldest trees of Chennai city.

According to this temple history a devotee named Annaswami Tambiran made a small hut and kept a Murugan painting for his worship. While he was meditating and worshipping he used to experience some divine power used to enter his body and made him to do mysterious things. Whatever he said had started to become true and this saying started to be said as “Arul Vakku” and he started to help the needy by getting jobs for the jobless, curing decease and marriage problems.One day he was feeling sick and according to the instruction of a Sadhu he visited Tiruthani and prayed to God that he would offer part of his tongue cut with knife at Bali Peetam and when he returned back his sickness went off. Then he went to Palani by foot and he experienced many divine
things happening on his way. Then he returned back and started to worship Lord Muruga in the small hut. When started to feel that his life is going to be an end he requested his close friend Ratnaswami to continue the pooja activities to the Murugan painting, which he was

doing. And Ratnaswami started to do the pooja work as he promised his friend and he built a small shrine and he also started to give Arul vakku. The public started to offer money to him and this was used to erect the Temple but before the Temple got finished Ratnaswami also expired.
Then entered into the arena some humanist philanthropists who metamorphosed that simple hut into a superb spiritual abode. Among the builders, the renowned Saiva Pravakta Kripananda Variyar's name takes first place. Thus emerged this great Muruga kshetra, and now a great temple drawing a steady streams of pilgrims throughout the year.

Chokkanathar, Mother Parvati, Kali, Bhairava, Shanmuga with Valli and Devasena.

The moolavar in standing posture resembles the Palani Muruga in every respect. In the inner prakara, there are many niches housing Dakshina Murti, Chandikeswar, Mahalakshmi, etc., It has a spacious hall used for conducting marriages and religious discourses. It is one of the most-frequented Murugan shrines in the city of Chennai. The entrance to this temple is crowned with a rajagopuram adorned with several stucco images depicting legends from the Skanda puranam. In front of the temple
is the temple tank. The eastern tower rises to a height of 40.8 metres. The 108 bharata natyam dance gestures can be seen on the eastern tower as well.
This temple is dedicated to Lord Muruga, worshipped as Lord of Tamil, by the people of Tamil Nadu. Although Lord Muruga in this temple has become very popular among the devotees, this temple is a full-fledged Siva temple with "Sanctum Sanctorums" for Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvathi, Lord Ganesh, in addition to Lord Muruga. Another God who is more popular in this temple is Lord Anjaneya, whose figure is sculpted on a pillar. Devotees apply butter to Lord Anjaneya and pray for the fulfillment of their wishes. This temple became popular more because of the patronage of the film-industry as most of the activities are concentrated in and around Kodambakkam and Vadapalani. More than 7000 marriages have taken place in the temple premises because people consider it auspicious for getting married there. This temple is always bustling with activity throughout the year and attracts devotees from far and wide.

Saipuram Shirdi Sai Baba Temple is situated at Injambakkam, in a lavish seven acres of pristine land facing the Bay of Bengal, on the outskirts of Chennai. Known as the Shirdi (the place where Sri Sai Baba lived) of the South, the temple complex has a number of buildings and temples. The majestic view of the seashore from the temple is a memorable experience.
Before proceeding to the main temple of Shri Shirdi Sai Baba one comes across the shrine of Lord Ganesh. The main temple of Shri Shirdi Sai Baba is an elegant hexagonal structure of white marble, towering over a height of 100 ft. The image of Shri Sai Baba is handcrafted in pure white marble in his famous sitting posture. The holy fire (Dhuni), from which Baba used to collect the ash (Udi), which is distributed to the devotees, has been burning uninterruptedly since Baba's days and is kept burning at Saipuram.
Other shrines here are dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati, Durga Devi, Lord Hanuman, Lord Ram, Sita and Lakshman, Lord Venkateswara, Navagrahas, Lord Krishna and Radha, and Lord Muruga with his consorts Valli and Devyani.
Another important spot here is the wish-fulfilling tree, devotees visit this place and tie a turmeric dipped string around the tree on Thursdays and Fridays. It is believed that ones difficult problems and wishes are being fulfilled by doing this.
Besides the Aarti, special pujas, marriage ceremonies and thread ceremonies are conducted on request. Arrangements for feeding the poor are also provided.
Meditation Hall, a free Health Care Center, a stall selling puja items, a bookshop selling Sai paraphernalia, a canteen, generator and telephone and transportation facilities are provided.

The town of Kanchi was the capital of the ancient Pallavas. The Kailasanathar temple here is one of the grand Pallava monuments. The Kamakshi Amman temple at Kanchipuram is an ancient one and is associated with Aadi Sankaracharya of the 1st millennium CE. The Tamil saying Kanchi Kamakshi, Madurai Meenakshi and Kaasi Visalakshi illustrates the importance of the Shakthi shrine that it is.
Ekambreswarar temple, the Kamakshiamman Temple and the Kumara Kottam temple and the Ulagalanda Perumaal Temple are the primary shrines in Periya Kanchipuram. The first three mentioned above are located in a manner as to suggest the Somaskanda manifestation of Shiva, Uma and Skanda in the town of Kanchi. There are no shrines to Ambal, in any of the shrines to Shiva in Kanchi. Kamakshi is considered to be wholly present in Kanchipuram, as the only Ambal shrine.
Legend has it that Kamakshi offered worship to a Shivalingam made out of sand, under a mango tree and gained Shiva's hand in marriage. (See also Ekambreswarar temple and Nilattingal Tundam).
The temple covers an area of about 5 acres, and the sanctum is crowned with a gold plated vimanam. Kamakshi is enshrined in a seated posture in the sanctum - and is referred to as the Parabhrama Swarupini, seated with Bhrama Vishnu Rudra Eswara and Sadasiva. A Sri Chakram has been installed in front of the image and worship is offered to it.
It is believed that Kamakshi was originally a Ugra Swaroopini, and that Aadi Sankaracharya, upon establishing the Sri Chakra, personified her as the Shanta Swaroopini (see also Akhilandeswari at Tiruvanaikkaval). It is believed that during the days of Adi Sankara, the presence of the Ugra Swaroopini was felt outside the temple precincts, and that Sankaracharya had requested her not to leave the temple complex. Symbolic of this, the festival image of Kamakshi, takes leave from Sankaracharya, at his shrine in the inner prakaram, each time she is taken out in procession.
The layout of the temple is rather complicated. The outer prakaram houses the temple tank, and several mandapams such as the 100 pillared hall, the dwajaarohana mandapam etc. Imposing views of the golden vimanam can be had from the outer prakaram, which is pierced with four entrances on all four sides. Images to Vishnu (Ninraan, Irundaan, Kidandaan) are seen near the temple tank.
One enters the four pillared hall then the inner prakaram, and climbs a series of steps, and reaches the sanctum. Immediately surrounding the sanctum are small shrines to Ardhanareeswarar, Soundaryalakshmi, Kallar (who has been mentioned in the hymns of Tirumangaialwar) and Varaahi. In this prakaram are shrines to Bangaru Kamakshi, Maha Saraswathi and Aadi Sankaracharya.
Kanchipuram is the seat of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham established by Adi Sankaracharya. It is believed that Sankaracharya attained samadhi at Kanchipuram, although another school of thought holds that Kedarnath in the Himalayas is the site of his samadhi.
Festivals: Four worship services are offered each day. The jewels adorning the image of the deity are of great beauty. The annual festival is celebrated in the month of Maasi. The silver chariot festival falls on the 7th day. Other festivals include Navaratri, Aadi and Aippasi Pooram, Sankara Jayanthi and Vasanta Utsavam in Vaikasi.

Kamakshi Amman Temple is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to goddess Kamakshi, one of the forms of the goddess Tripura Sundari. It is located in the historic city Kanchipuram, near Chennai, India and is popularly associated with Adi Sankaracharya, one of the greatest Hindu saints. Along with Madurai Meenakshi, Thiruvanaikaval Akilandeswari, Vishalakshi Varanasi, Kamakshi is an important part of worship of Parvati.
The main deity is seated in a majestic Padmasana posture, an yogic posture signifying peace and prosperity, instead of the traditional standing pose in most other temples of Parvati. The goddess holds a sugarcane bow and lotus and parrot in the lower two of her arms (Many of the Hindu god forms generally have four arms) and has the two divine instruments Pasa and Angusa in her upper two arms. There are no traditional Parvati or Shakthi shrines in the city of Kanchipuram, apart from this temple, which is unusual in a traditional city that has hundreds of traditional temples. There are various legends attributed to it. One of them according to Kamkshivilasa is that the Goddess had to absorb all the other shakthi forms to give boon to Manmatha (the Hindu god of fertility and love).[1] Another legend attributes it to the Raja Rajeswari pose of the deity that signifies an absolute control over the land under its control, leaving no other forms of Shakthi.[2] Legend has it that Kamakshi offered worship to a Shivalingam made out of sand, under a mango tree and gained Shiva's hand in marriage.
